Equine Inspired Tip
Do you ever seem to be gripped by an emotion or stuck in
one way of looking at something (usually a self-defeating
way)? One of the clues that we are avoiding feeling is that
we keep "thinking" about it. When we "think" about a
feeling, rather than feel it, we are really resisting it.
The paradox is that going into the feeling--actually
feeling what is there--helps us move through it, gain
perspective, and take appropriate action.
One way we have our clients get out of these stuck places
(and out of their heads) is to groom a horse. The rhythmic
strokes of brushing a horse's body gradually move the
client to relax into her own body. Once in the sensate
body, breathing more deeply, aware of the texture and
colors of the horse’s coat, it’s smell, the sounds of its
breath and movement, it is harder for the client to resist
feeling. Instead he or she starts to get in touch with what
is actually there, be it fear, anger, frustration or
anything else, feel it and move through it.
Any kind of rhythmic movement will help you when you are
stuck; dancing, walking, riding a bicycle, drumming,
swimming, or focusing on breathing deep breaths. An added
advantage in equine work: the horse reflects back to you
when you have reached that place of truth. It is amazing to
see a large horse almost fall asleep under your brush,
particularly if just moments ago, before you took time to
breath into your own body and feel what was there, that
same horse was stomping its feet and switching its tail.
Why is Horse Assisted Learning So Successful?
EGE (Equine Guided Education) is an experiential learning
process that sticks. Horses are non- judgmental, honest
mirrors. Working with horses helps you become aware of
confusion, anxieties and limiting beliefs that inhibit your
ability to reach your goals. Exercises with the horses (all
on the ground), and insights from human coaches will
clarify your vision and give you words and actions to reach
your goals.
