Equine Inspired Tip

Interpretation or observation?

During a workshop recently we asked our participants to
look at a horse and tell us what they observed without
interpretation. (See “Wisdom Horse Coaching completes
successful workshop for health group” article at the bottom
of this column.)

When Buster yawned, one person said, “The horse is tired.”
Another offered, “Buster is bored.” A third stated, “He’s
lazy.” To observe without interpretation is to simply
notice that the horse yawned. Buster was about 15 hands
tall. Some people interpreted this to be big. However,
Jack, his pal, is taller. Does that mean Buster is small?

The participants began to notice how quickly and easily
they make meaning out of what they observe before they take
note of what simply is. They not only do this with the
horses, but with each other. Great insights surfaced about
how easy it is to regard personal interpretations about
what we observe as “the truth,” and how quickly that can
lead to miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Interpretations are often heard by others as judgments and
can inadvertently trigger defensiveness, shame or anger.
It’s tough to communicate effectively when mired in
interpretation.

So make observing without interpretation a practice. It’s
harder than you think. But when you can separate
observation from interpretation, you can then say what you
see and own the meaning you make of it. “Hey Joe. I notice
you’ve been late twice this week.” Maybe he’s not the lazy,
irresponsible bum you think he is. Maybe, if you ask, he’ll
tell you what’s really going on. How quickly that can clear
up misunderstanding—on both sides!

Why is Horse Assisted Learning So Successful?

EGE (Equine Guided Education) is an experiential learning
process that sticks. Horses are non- judgmental, honest
mirrors. Working with horses helps you become aware of
confusion, anxieties and limiting beliefs that inhibit your
ability to reach your goals. Exercises with the horses (all
on the ground), and insights from human coaches will
clarify your vision and give you words and actions to reach
your goals.
