WHC Featured in Business Journal

In early March, the Minneapolis St. Paul Business
Journal called us for an interview for a
special report on Education and Training. Sarah Dale
wrote an outstanding article which speaks of our
work with horses in a very positive light. We
envision it benefitting all of us in the industry, and
we encourage you to send us articles that feature
you or others in the field.

Below is an excerpt from that article. Read
the entire article at Twin Cities
Business Journal.

Minneapolis firm trots out latest coaching trend --

equine-assisted education

The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal -
March 10, 2006

by Sarah Sturmon Dale, Contributing writer

As a senior operations consultant for
Catholic
Health Initiatives, Mike Stoecklein admits he was a
little skeptical when he heard he would be
participating in a team-building exercise with Wisdom
Horse Coaching.

"My first reaction was: What in the world can we
learn from animals?" said the 50-year-old Lakeville
resident, who spends most of his week traveling
between member hospitals of the Denver-based firm
helping them identify ways to improve performance.

But today, Stoecklein, part of a 16-member
group who attended the workshop, is a convert.
"It may sound goofy, but it worked," he
said. "There
was a lot of learning that came out of it. It
helped us
identify ways we can work better together and not
pit ourselves against each other. We still use
the
metaphors we found that day when we are talking to
each other today."

Stoecklein's skepticism and conversion is not
uncommon, said Lynn Baskfield and Ann Kerr
Romberg, the principal owners of Minneapolis-based
Wisdom Horse Coaching.

"Sometimes people enroll because they've sat in
enough paneled rooms," Baskfield said. "They just
don't want to do that again, and this is something
different."

And in fact, their business reflects a growing trend,
said Ariana Strozzi, founder of the California-based
Equine Guided Education Association and author of
books on the subject.

While the idea of equine-assisted therapy has been
widely embraced, equine-assisted education is just
now catching on, she said.

"The inclusion of horses into all forms of education
and learning has been increasing dramatically since
2000," said Strozzi, who helped pioneer the field 16
years ago by launching her own equine-coaching
business in California. "These programs are becoming
much more common and increasing rapidly."

Recently, the Equine
Guided Education Association
(http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=axwastbab.0.0.ldkhblbab.0&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.equineguidededucation.org)
held its second
annual conference with an international attendance
that included people from Australia, Brazil, Germany
and the United States.
Strozzi attributed the growing popularity of such
programs to people's need to connect back to the
natural world and an influx of women in business...

"Horses have no prior judgment; they have
no agenda," Romberg said. "But they can give people
a clear reflection of what they are doing."

Both Romberg and Baskfield initially launched their
own equine-assisted coaching businesses. Soon,
mutual friends said they ought to meet. Over lunch,
they formed what both call "a truly collaborative
partnership."

The two women custom-design sessions for clients
based on concerns the client identifies and issues
they gather from some advance work. The lessons
cover topics such as dealing with problems in project
management, leadership, communication, teamwork
or conflict resolution.

Jim Earley, who has run Golden Valley-based

Trailblazer Coaching
(http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=axwastbab.0.0.ldkhblbab.0&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.trailblazercoaching.com%2F)for
16 years, said he has
used
Wisdom Horse Coaching with a number of clients for
whom talking simply wasn't doing the job.

"There is really something that you
experience out there that is not in your head,"
he
said. "You do it and you just get it. People just go
out there and they get what they have to get."

What We are Up To

People are craving time to reconnect with
themselves in ways they can't do in the office.
That's the beauty of equine guided education.

1. We have been busy doing sessions
for
individual
clients,
creating custom training and public workshops, and
updating our
website.

Ann is taking Kendall
Summerhawk's Website Wisdom course
(http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=axwastbab.0.0.ldkhblbab.0&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.websitewisdomu.com%2F)
and is
learning many new ideas that are already improving
our website. Check it out:

Lynn, as our
outreach
person, has been talking to prospective apprentices
and interested corporate clients.

2. We've been inviting busy women
to
come our Busy Women Workshop, and a lot
of
you have said "Yes!" to some soulful time for
yourselves. We have 1 slot
left for April and are now taking registrations for July
29-30.

We really love doing this
workshop. It's a
time for all that busyness to melt away and to
rediscover what has heart and meaning for you.

DO COME!

3. We are collaborating with The
Loft Literary Center

Minneapolis to present a two day writiers
workshop in June.

Horse Wisdom: Finding Authentic
Voice

* Find your authentic voice

* Trust your deep knowing

* Give voice to the stories that satisfy your
soul

* Tap into the wisdom of the horse

This 2 Saturday series will focus on bringing your
stories to life. You will develop one or two stories (or
poems, or other creative piece),
deepen the pieces, play with them, and bring them
to their fullness from the truth of your experience.
We will meet at a farm in the Twin Cities metro
area.

This rich experience will give you access to your
writing no other class can offer. You will come away
with at least one fully developed piece and the
continued inspiration that comes from writing with
the horses and other writers.

All exercises with horses are done on the ground.

No previous horse experience is necessary.

Why is Horse Assisted Learning So Successful?

EGE (Equine Guided Education) is an experiential
learning process that sticks. Horses are non-
judgmental, honest mirrors. Working with horses
helps you become aware of confusion, anxieties and
limiting beliefs that inhibit your ability to reach your
goals. Exercises with the horses (all on the ground),
and insights from human coaches will clarify your
vision and give you words and actions to reach your
goals.
