Wisdom Horse (TM) Newsletter Equine Guided Education
for Leadership and Life
January 2008

Greetings!

Welcome!

A look of amazement crossed her face that I hadn't seen for
a long time, maybe since we were kids. "Maybe that
obsessive voice is only a small part of who I am," she
marveled. "Maybe I am OK after all". Read the whole story
by Chris With, one of our apprentices, to your right.

FIVE of our apprentices are GRADUATING this month. Our next
session begins Feb. 1 and WE HAVE OPENINGS just for YOU!

We are off to present at the Equine Guided Education
Association conference in California. See our online store
for a new e-book of activities for Equine Guided programs
which will be rolled out at the conference.

Last but not least, look for our new Magnetic Leadership

"The opportunity to assist...at a leadership/team building
training...was a really great experience. I had two great
teachers [Ann and Lynn], actually six including four equine
counterparts, that showed me the importance of planning,
going with the flow and still being very present..." -
Jenny Berhow - Apprentice

What we are up to

At the 4th annual Equine Guided Education Association
conference Jan. 24-26, we will present the results of the
Limbic Stress Assessment and Heart Math research we
conducted in partnership with Dr. Su Wahl and Beth Duff in
Sept. 2007. Our apprentice, Nancy Peregrine, created a
magnificent DVD complete with narrative, pictures and music
to showcase some of the work we did. Watch for copies of
this DVD to be available on our web site in early February.

Maybe I'm OK after all

Chris With will graduate from our apprenticeship program at
the end of January 2008. Her story illustrates her growth
as an Equine Guided Coach AND the transformational power of
Equine Guided Education. She tells, with permission, about
a practice coaching session she did for her sister during
Phase III of her program.

Bernadette and I drove up to St. Cloud together last Friday
to work at Fieldstone Farms, where my sister Laurie boards
her Fjord horse, Oz. The hour-long drive gave us a chance
to talk about what she wanted to work on in her session.
After some discussion, I asked her if she was saying that
she wanted to have stronger boundaries, and she said yes,
but flexible ones that she could control. She said she
wanted to work on how to allow her adult self to take care
of the wounded inner child that emerges when she gets
triggered with stress.

Although Bernadette had only heard about equine guided
coaching before her session, she was instantly able to
understand how it works. I asked her which of the horses
represented her inner child and which her adult self. She
picked out a quiet reddish-brown mare as her inner child
because that horse was sweet and passive. A white horse,
which she called "the Queen," became her female energy, and
the black one, "the King," was her male energy. Grover, a
little Shetland pony, came up and started chewing on
Bernadette's sleeve and sticking his nose in her face. I
asked her who Grover represented in her life and she said
he was the obsessive voice in her head that keeps demanding
her attention.

Bernadette said she wanted the Queen to protect the inner
child horse from Grover. And sure enough, no sooner had she
said that than the Queen walked over and stood between
Grover and the inner child horse. The horses in the pasture
we were in started feeding on a big bale of hay and were
very calm. However, other horses in the next section of the
field started to gallop around and buck at each other. One
of them tried to bite the other's butt. I asked Bernadette
what that was about for her, and she said it reminded her
of the outside world where things sometimes get rough. She
wanted to protect her inner child from that. But then the
inner child horse stuck its nose over the fence into the
outside section. Again I asked her what that was about for
her, and she said that the child part of herself really
wants to be out in the world playing with the other horses.
Since the inner child horse was holding its head over the
fence, I pointed to it and asked Bernadette what the fence
represented. She said it was her boundaries. "And what's
different about this fence?" I asked. "It's electric, so I
can turn it on and off," she said. Hence, the flexible
boundaries she was looking for.

Soon the horses in the outside section calmed down and
began to eat. In Bernadette's section of the pasture, the
King horse started walking towards the open field, followed
by the inner child horse. The other horses remained behind,
feeding on the hay bale. Bernadette pointed out how it
seemed to her that the King horse was protecting the inner
child horse as they went into unknown territory. But then
the inner child horse walked past the King and started out
to the open field by itself. The King stayed behind, not
far away. Pretty soon the Queen also followed them into the
field. The King and Queen stayed in the background not far
from the inner child horse eating hay. Grover stayed
behind, still eating from the hay bale.

The inner child horse went over to a beautiful apple tree
and started eating the apples off the tree. It was such a
magical moment; it almost looked like it could have been on
a postcard. Bernadette remarked that she had been reading
about unicorns and how they ate off the pomegranate tree.

I asked her to look back at the bale of hay, which was now
far in the distance. Grover was still eating hay from it.
She said he looked very far away, and she could hardly see
him. I observed that if she would hang out under the "magic
Unicorn tree", as she called it, Grover was too far away to
bother her. A look of amazement crossed her face that I
hadn't been there since she was a kid. "Maybe that
obsessive voice is only a small part of who I am," she
marveled. "Maybe I am OK after all".
