Equine Guided Education - How Far We've Come in 4 Short Years!

Lynn and I attended the 4th annual Equine Guided Education Association conference (for the 4th year in a row) in January 2008. As an observer of people and organizations, it was fascinating to me to see how far this field of giving "voice" to horses to guide us humans in our lives has come.

When we first met in 2005, there were about 70 of us, mostly from the US, but also Canada, Scotland, England, Germany and other countries. We were amazed and thrilled to see that what we weren't crazy, that other people had the same dream we did and were actually doing this work too.

There was also fear present-how could we "prove" this work was valuable? What standards did we need? Were others better than us? Would we create certifications that we who had been doing the work for a while couldn't achieve and therefore we would be excluded or judged inadequate? Could anyone make money doing this work? Horses are really expensive to keep after all.

This year there was a greater openness and curiosity about what everyone was doing than ever before. There were sages such as Linda Kohanov, the keynote speaker, and an ever wise presence at the conference. Larry Freeborg brought valuable information collected in interviews and websites about the growth and change in our industry. Even more applications for how horses help us were shared and recognized. Wisdom Horse Coaching, in a collaborative presentation with Beth Duff of Scotland and Su Wahl of Wisconsin shared research we started last fall with measurement tools such as Limbic Stress Assessment and Heart Math. Beverly Kane, M.D., and Sharon North Pohl and demonstrated how equine guided learning helps interns at Stanford Medical School learn better bedside manner. And Shannon Knapp and her colleague Liza Satir showed us how they partner with horses to work with youth at risk.

In addition, we noticed that practitioners are really getting focused on how to get clients and make a living at this work. People are creating equine guided marketing programs to support us practitioners in creating solid businesses!

It is clear the world feels ready for this work and we are ready to take it into the world. Working with the ever-wise and forgiving horses benefits humans in ways no other modality can achieve.

Watch the media for more about this work and watch it become mainstream!

Holistic Horse Fair May 17-18 in IOWA

Heather Kitching is a visionary client who worked with us when she was just launching her business, Eagle Valley Equestrian Services in Fountain City, WI.

She says,
"When I came to work with Lynn and the horses, I was just going into business for myself. I knew what it could look like, but I wasn't sure how to get there. Lynn helped me get clear on what I wanted to offer the world. I gained confidence in myself and started to take the dream I had for my business and myself seriously. This made it possible to share my unique way of working with horses with clients. My natural leadership skills blossomed and my vision grew. This set me apart from other businesses in the area and my practice began to flourish.".

Not only did her holistic horse business flourish, her artistic spirit blossomed and she expanded her holistic vision to spearhead the first annual Holistic Horse Fair to be held this year May 17-18 in Harpers Ferry, IA. Speakers topics range from Qigong Energy Balancing to Natural Hoof Care to Equine Spiritual Adventures. Check it out!
3 Tips for Quieting Those Negative Internal Voices

Do you find yourself going into a fog and not feeling present at times during the day? It's likely your internal negative voices have started to harass you. All that noise is enough to make you just want to check out.

Besides having a lot of opportunities to face my own negative internal voices lately, many of my clients have too. Sometimes these voices can seem like a chorus of abusive parents!

Here are 3 tips for how to quiet the din.
Tip # 1: Become Aware. The first key to coming back to the present, the place of true joy and infinite possibility, is to become AWARE of what your nasty old voices are saying. Taking a deep breathe is the first step. Then to become more aware of what is happening you could start to write the words of your inner negative voice on paper. It may not be pleasant stuff to hear, but once you've done just this much, you are 80% of the way towards a different way of being.

Tip # 2: Accept Everything. Once you are aware and conscious of these words, move toward ACCEPTING them and the part of you that is saying them. I know. Accepting what's there, no matter how uncomfortable, is a radical thing to do. Look at it this way. It's not someone else judging you. It's only a part of YOU. By accepting this part of yourself, you go the next 15% towards a different way of being.

(Mind you, I usually find this step the most difficult. Sometimes, a conversation with the negative voice will help. Once it knows you are listening, like a child who needs attention, it doesn't have to yell so loudly.)

Tip # 3: Take a different Action. Once you have become fully aware that there are negative voices and you have accepted the fact that they are saying what they are saying, taking a different ACTION is easy! Some possible actions might be:
•   Tell the voice that what it is saying is not true
•   Recognize what it says is true but tell it you are going respond with compassion rather than judgement
•   Let it know you now can choose how you respond and tell it to go watch TV. You are busy living your beautiful life.

Try this and move into the present moment! It's much more fun here!
