Honoring Wisdom by Ann Romberg

The night before I left for the conference, I learned that Lynn would be unable to attend and it would be up to me to deliver our demonstration. (Lynn was caring for her daughter and family in Arizona after her daughter's surgery). I had seen the exercise we were to demonstrate once before, but had never facilitated it. It was an exercise Lynn created based on her knowledge of Native American rituals and her wisdom to bring horses to guide the process. I felt out of my element, knowing some about the Medicine Wheel, but not enough to speak to it the way Lynn would, especially by myself.

Fortunately, I had an ace in the hole; Beth Duff from Scotland. When she got off the plane in San Francisco I said, "Guess what? You are co-facilitating the demonstration with me on Saturday!"

Beth and I had co-facilitated together when I was in Scotland last April. She graciously agreed to work together to understand the exercise, plan the demo and even found some poems in the Sacred Path book to read during the exercise. We had a copy of the handout Lynn had created and made copies for the participants. I felt well organized and prepared.

Still I was nervous, feeling like I was filling big shoes and deeply committed to honoring Lynn and the wisdom and power of this exercise. I could barely listen to the morning presentations and left early with Beth to go to the barn. Maggie McGlynn (one of our apprentices) had offered to do a grounding ritual with us before the demo and we took her up on it. Her ritual worked magic, bringing in energy from Mother Earth and the Cosmos, combining them in our bodies and souls to connect us to the ancient Native Americans who walked on the very land on which we were standing.

We delivered the exercise with clarity, while honoring the wisdom of this native ritual and the spirit in which Lynn had created it. The horses worked their magic with mirroring and metaphors. The participants who individually did the exercise with the horse, shared their experiences and learnings. The audience was engaged and offered comments to deepen their experience.

After the whole audience had a chance to bring something they wanted guidance on to the Medicine Wheel, we asked for a few shares. There were a number of shares but one in particular told me we had succeeded in our mission. One man shared what deep peace and gratitude he felt for this experience. We had succeeded!
A huge thank you to Beth, Jane and our apprentices Maggie, Mindy, Monique, Jean and Jeanne who held a loving space for me throughout the conference.

The Medicine Wheel - What Perspectives Do the Directions (and Horse) Give You?

Lynn designed the Medicine Wheel activity. Here is some background she wrote about this Native American Tradition. The picture above is of Ann, Anne-Marie (a volunteer) and Jet Star taken by Jane Flanders.
In Native American culture, as in many indigenous cultures, medicine means anything that heals or makes whole. The earth has medicine. Animals have medicine. There is medicine in the wind and in the stars. There is medicine in laughter and there is medicine in silence. Each person has his or her own medicine.

The Medicine Wheel is an ancient and sacred recognition of the medicine of change. It is sometimes called the Wheel of Change. It helps us look at things from many different perspectives.

The shape of the wheel itself suggests the rolling on of the cycles of life. Each aspect of the wheel is associated with one of the five directions: East, South, West, North, and Center(or Heart). In many ceremonies, the Above and the Below are also included.

There is controversy among some Native Americans about whether the ancient traditions, rituals and teachings should be shared, but at this point in history, many of the Elders say, "It is time."

Congratulations to Cathy Buelow and Martha Olson for completing their apprenticeships during 2009!

Cathy has become our first Affiliate and is a great asset to Wisdom Horse Coaching!

And we welcome Rose Dykstra to our apprenticeship program!
         Greetings
from Ann and Lynn

During the past several weeks, Lynn and her husband Bill have been in Arizona tending to Lynn's daughter (who had emergency surgery) and her family. It has been a VERY tough duty, especially as Lynn was still healing from her own surgery. At least she got to be in warm weather!

Ann took on running the business in Lynn's absence and attended the EGEA conference in California. We were to present a demonstration together and Lynn was very sorry to miss that.

See Ann's story "Honoring Wisdom" to learn how the demonstration turned out.

Lynn will be back very soon and we are both glad of that!
